1. What is considered hazardous waste?

2. Is there a disposal charge?

Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling (ISWR) charges businesses only what it costs to safely dispose of hazardous waste, and asks that residents pay as much as they can to help offset ISWR's disposal costs.

3. How do I dispose of water-based paint?

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility does not accept latex or water-based paints. These paints can be thrown in the regular trash when dry and solid. An easy way to tell if the paint is water-based is if the directions specify soap and water clean-up.

Directions for Drying

1. Remove paint can lid. Stir paint.
2. Add one part absorbent (kitty litter, floor dry, bentonite) to two parts paint and mix well.
3. Leave lid off to let dry.
4. Paint will be solid and dry in about 24 hours. It will look like dried cottage cheese.
5. It is safe to throw in the trash. Leave the lid off so your collector can see that the paint is solid.

Teton County Integrated Solid Waste and Recycling (ISWR) sells 50-pound bags of bentonite for $20. This is the best material to use when drying paint.

4. What do I do when I bring materials for disposal?

• Make an appointment online in advance or by calling 307-733-7678.
• Take an inventory of your materials.
• Try to bring substances in their original containers. If they are not in their original containers please label them.
• When transporting, make sure all containers are securely sealed.
• If possible, do not bring children or pets with you. If it can't be avoided, please separate hazardous substances from yourself, children and pets during transport.
• Turn off your vehicle when you enter the carport.
• Please refrain from talking on your cell phone while dropping off waste.
• When you arrive at the facility, please park and wait for further instructions. Do not remove your waste, our staff will remove it for you.

5. Why is it important to dispose of household hazardous waste properly?

• Substances poured into household drains and toilets go into sewage treatment process, eventually impacting fish and wildlife.
• Substances pour onto soil, streets, or into storm drains are carried to our streams, causing harm to our environment, fish and wildlife.
• Hazardous waste that reach our landfills can leach into soil and pollute groundwater.
• Throwing hazardous waste into the garbage can threaten sanitation workers, who can be injured by acids, fires and explosions.
